EU Product Labels and Care Labels: Compliance Requirements for Importers

2026.08.26

Why Labels Matter for EU Sales

When you import products into the EU, correct labeling is not optional — it is a legal requirement. Missing or incorrect labels can cause customs delays, platform delisting, or consumer complaints. For Spanish-speaking markets, the label must be in Spanish.

What a Product Label Must Contain

A compliant product label typically includes the following elements:

  • Product Name: The product type or model
  • Technical Specifications: Where applicable, input voltage, power, and frequency
  • Importer Information: The importer name, address, and tax identification number (NIF in Spain)
  • Country of Origin: Marked as MADE IN CHINA

Example: Product Label

A typical product label looks like this:

Product Name: Smart Tire Attachment
Input: 3V / Power: 35W, 3.0MHZ
Importer: Elisabet De la Rosa Asencio
Address: Plaza Antonia Quintana número 1 bajo A
NIF: 49239639C
MADE IN CHINA

What a Care Label Must Contain

For textiles and clothing, a care label (washing label) must state the fiber composition and the washing instructions in the language of the selling country.

Example: Care Label in Spanish

A compliant care label for a polyester product looks like this:

100% Polyester / 100% Poliéster
Lavado a máquina en frío suave con colores similares.
Sin cloro.
En caso de secar en secadora siempre a baja temperatura y retirar rápidamente.
Planchar a baja temperatura.
Importer: Elisabet De la Rosa Asencio
NIF: 49239639C
MADE IN CHINA

Key Requirements to Remember

  • Language: Labels must be in Spanish for Spain, including the washing instructions
  • Importer Details: The EU importer name, address, and NIF must appear — the manufacturer alone is not enough
  • Fiber Composition: Textiles must state the full fiber composition
  • Country of Origin: Required for customs and marketplace compliance
